LINDI, Tanzania, October 26, 2026 — Minister for Energy, Hon. Dr. Juma Zuberi Homera, has officially inaugurated the Likong’o Pre-Primary and Primary School in Lindi Region, constructed at a cost of TZS 1.278 billion under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme associated with Tanzania's Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project. The school has the capacity to accommodate 400 pupils.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Homera reaffirmed the commitment of the Sixth Phase Government, under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensuring that strategic investments in the energy sector deliver tangible socioeconomic benefits to local communities, particularly those situated near major development projects.

He explained that the construction of the school demonstrates this commitment through a CSR initiative coordinated by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), in collaboration with investors participating in the LNG Project.

Dr. Homera further noted that the Government had granted tax exemptions to facilitate the implementation of the project, reflecting its commitment to supporting investments in essential social services and ensuring that the country's natural resources contribute meaningfully to sustainable community development.

"I have been informed, and have personally witnessed, that this project has been completed 100 percent, in accordance with the required quality and safety standards and contractual specifications. This modern school will accommodate approximately 400 pupils, including 350 primary school pupils and 50 pre-primary pupils," Dr. Homera stated.

He added that the investment is intended to improve teaching and learning conditions, reduce classroom overcrowding and create a conducive environment for improved educational performance and academic achievement.

The school features modern classrooms, administrative buildings and teachers' residential accommodation, designed to enhance working and living conditions for teachers while improving the overall quality and efficiency of education delivery.

Furthermore, the school infrastructure incorporates inclusive facilities designed to accommodate persons with disabilities, including accessible sanitation facilities and pathways that facilitate access for individuals with special needs. A waste management system has also been installed to promote cleanliness, health and safety for pupils and teachers.

OVER 150 LOCAL RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Dr. Homera highlighted that the benefits of the project extend beyond education, contributing directly to employment creation and economic opportunities for residents of Likong’o and surrounding communities.

He revealed that more than 150 local residents secured employment during various phases of the school's construction, while businesses and service providers based in Lindi Municipality were given priority in supplying construction materials and delivering essential services.

According to the Minister, this approach has strengthened local participation and encouraged the involvement of domestic enterprises in the implementation of development projects.

PROJECT EXPANDS ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER

Dr. Homera further explained that the project facilitated the construction of approximately 1.5 kilometres of clean water pipeline infrastructure, connected to the network operated by the Lindi Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (LUWASA).

The infrastructure is expected to provide a reliable water supply to the school while also benefiting households in neighbouring communities, thereby improving access to clean and safe water.

2,000 TREES PLANTED TO PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

As part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability, TPDC, in collaboration with LNG Project investors, the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), teachers, pupils and parents, coordinated the planting of 2,000 trees within and around the school premises.

The initiative aims to improve the school environment, encourage responsible management of natural resources and cultivate environmental awareness and conservation practices among pupils and the surrounding community.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Homera called upon residents of Likong’o and neighbouring areas to take collective responsibility for safeguarding and maintaining the newly constructed school infrastructure to ensure that it continues to serve present and future generations.

He underscored the importance of sustained cooperation among the Government, investors and local communities in ensuring that strategic energy investments contribute to broader national development priorities, including education, water supply, employment creation and environmental conservation.

The inauguration of Likong’o Pre-Primary and Primary School represents a significant community development initiative associated with Tanzania's LNG Project, demonstrating how investments in the energy sector can support essential public services and contribute to inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic development.
