ZANZIBAR, Tanzania — August 29, 2026: Tanzania has once again cemented its position as one of Africa’s premier tourism destinations after being named Africa’s Leading Destination 2026 at the World Travel Awards (WTA) Africa Gala Ceremony, held at Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar on August 28.

The prestigious recognition marks the third consecutive year Tanzania has won the coveted continental tourism title, following its victories in 2024 and 2025.

The achievement places Tanzania firmly at the forefront of Africa’s tourism industry and provides fresh momentum for the country’s efforts to strengthen its global tourism brand, attract more visitors and expand tourism-related investment.

🏆 TANZANIA LEADS AFRICA ON THE WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS STAGE

Tanzania’s success extended beyond the headline award, with the country and its leading tourism destinations receiving recognition in several major categories.

Among the recognised destinations and institutions were:

  • 🇹🇿 Tanzania — Africa’s Leading Destination
  • 🏆 Tanzania Tourist Board — Africa’s Leading Tourist Board
  • 🦁 Serengeti National Park — Africa’s Leading National Park
  • 🐘 Serengeti National Park — Africa’s Leading Big 5 National Park
  • 🏔️ Kilimanjaro National Park — Africa’s Leading Mountain National Park
  • 🏝️ Zanzibar — Africa’s Leading Beach Destination
  • 🎉 Zanzibar — Africa’s Leading Festival & Event Destination

The awards underline the diversity of Tanzania’s tourism offering, ranging from world-renowned wildlife and mountain tourism to beaches, culture, heritage and events.

🌍 FROM SERENGETI TO ZANZIBAR

Tanzania’s competitive advantage lies in the breadth of experiences available within one destination.

The country combines some of the world's most recognised wildlife experiences in the Serengeti, the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, the beaches and cultural attractions of Zanzibar, as well as historical, cultural and adventure destinations across the mainland.

This diversity allows Tanzania to appeal to multiple international tourism markets, including safari travellers, adventure tourists, beach holidaymakers, luxury travellers, cultural tourists and business visitors.

🇹🇿 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS SHARE THE SUCCESS

The latest World Travel Awards recognition also highlights the contribution of Tanzania’s broader tourism ecosystem.

Tourism involves a wide network of stakeholders, including national parks, conservation authorities, hotels, tour operators, airlines, travel agencies, guides, local communities and other businesses.

Recognition at an international level therefore provides visibility not only for individual destinations but also for businesses operating throughout the tourism value chain.

For Tanzania’s private sector, the awards present an opportunity to leverage the country’s growing international profile to attract new clients, partnerships and investment.

📈 WHAT THE AWARD MEANS FOR TANZANIA

Winning Africa’s Leading Destination for three consecutive years strengthens Tanzania’s destination brand at a time when competition among African tourism markets remains intense.

The recognition can support efforts to:

  • Increase international tourist arrivals
  • Strengthen Tanzania’s global destination brand
  • Attract tourism investment
  • Promote local tourism enterprises
  • Expand international marketing partnerships
  • Increase tourism revenues
  • Support employment and livelihoods
  • Encourage development of new tourism products

For the tourism industry, the award is therefore more than a ceremonial achievement. It can be used as a strategic marketing asset in international markets.

🎯 TURNING RECOGNITION INTO TOURISM GROWTH

The next opportunity for Tanzania is to convert international recognition into measurable economic impact.

The country can use the momentum generated by the World Travel Awards to strengthen destination marketing, expand digital campaigns, improve visitor experiences and promote lesser-known attractions alongside established destinations.

Greater promotion of cultural tourism, heritage sites, coastal destinations, adventure tourism, conference tourism and emerging wildlife destinations could further diversify Tanzania’s tourism economy.

The private sector will also remain critical in developing new tourism products and improving the quality and competitiveness of visitor services.

🌐 TANZANIA'S GLOBAL TOURISM MOMENTUM

The World Travel Awards victory comes as Tanzania continues to position itself more prominently on the global tourism stage.

Hosting the 2026 World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony in Zanzibar has further placed the country in the international spotlight, bringing leading figures from the African travel and tourism industry to Tanzania.

The country is also scheduled to host the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony on December 12, 2026, creating another major opportunity to showcase Tanzania to a global audience.

🏝️ ZANZIBAR HOSTS A NIGHT OF TOURISM EXCELLENCE

The Africa Gala Ceremony held at Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar brought together tourism leaders, industry stakeholders and representatives from across the continent.

Hosting the event in Zanzibar provided an opportunity to showcase the destination's beaches, hospitality, culture and tourism infrastructure to an international audience.

Zanzibar’s own recognition as Africa’s Leading Beach Destination further strengthened the significance of the event for Tanzania’s tourism sector.

🦁 SERENGETI AND KILIMANJARO REMAIN GLOBAL ICONS

The continued recognition of the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro reinforces their importance within Tanzania’s tourism brand.

The Serengeti remains synonymous with exceptional wildlife and safari experiences, while Mount Kilimanjaro continues to attract adventure travellers from around the world.

Together with Zanzibar and Tanzania’s growing range of cultural and heritage attractions, they form a powerful foundation for the country's international tourism proposition.

🇹🇿 A STRONGER BRAND FOR DESTINATION TANZANIA

The latest award strengthens the Destination Tanzania brand and gives the country an additional platform to communicate its tourism strengths to international travellers.

Tanzania’s tourism proposition increasingly extends beyond the traditional safari narrative to include:

Wildlife | Mountains | Beaches | Culture | Heritage | Adventure | Luxury | Business Tourism

This diversified portfolio gives Tanzania the potential to attract visitors throughout the year and from a wider range of source markets.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tanzania’s third consecutive Africa’s Leading Destination title sends a strong signal about the competitiveness and international appeal of the country's tourism sector.

The challenge now is to ensure that recognition translates into more visitors, longer stays, increased tourism spending, greater investment and broader benefits for local communities.

Sustaining that momentum will require continued collaboration between Government, conservation institutions, tourism businesses, communities and international partners.

🇹🇿 TANZANIA TENAAA!

From the plains of the Serengeti to the summit of Kilimanjaro, and from the beaches of Zanzibar to Tanzania’s rich cultural and historical heritage, the country continues to strengthen its position as a premier destination on the African continent.

For the third consecutive year, the message from the World Travel Awards stage is clear:

AFRICA’S LEADING DESTINATION — TANZANIA 🇹🇿🏆

Tanzania Wins. Ni Tanzania Tena!
