Tanzania has divided construction work on the Makutupora–Tabora section of its standard-gauge railway into five smaller sections and brought in additional contractors to accelerate progress, Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa said.

Speaking during an inspection in the Nyahua Valley, Mbarawa said the stretch, which forms the third section of the SGR project, had faced prolonged delays but was now progressing more steadily.

“This section faced challenges for a long time, and progress was slow, but work is now proceeding well. I commend the decision to divide it into five smaller sections,” he said.

The inspection marked the first day of the Minister’s four-day tour of SGR construction sites across Tanzania.

Mbarawa said the contractors’ commitment and the availability of TSh3.67 trillion in funding would support faster construction and the project’s completion. He did not specify a completion date in the remarks provided.

Tanzania Railways Corporation Director General Machibya Shiwa said work under way in the area included railway embankment construction, sleeper production and culvert construction.
