The Government has directed the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) to work with insurance sector stakeholders to ensure that insurance education reaches citizens across the country, including farmers, livestock keepers, fishers, small business owners, young people, women, entrepreneurs and rural communities.

The directive was issued by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Hon. Engineer Mshamu Ali Munde, on behalf of the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, during the launch of the 2025 Insurance Market Performance Report.

Hon. Munde said the objective was to make insurance an integral part of everyday life for every Tanzanian by improving awareness of its importance, how to access services and the procedures for claiming compensation when disasters and other insured events occur.

“This education must extend beyond urban centres. It must reach farmers, livestock keepers, fishers, small business owners, young people, women, motorcycle and three-wheeler operators, employees, entrepreneurs and rural communities. We want insurance to become an integral part of every Tanzanian’s daily life,” he emphasised.

He underscored the need to strengthen public understanding of insurance services to increase participation in the sector, noting that a substantial proportion of citizens still lacked sufficient knowledge of the benefits of insurance, how to obtain cover and how to submit claims.

Hon. Munde also highlighted the insurance sector’s role in advancing Universal Health Insurance (UHI). He called for collaboration with the ministry responsible for health and other relevant institutions to educate citizens on the importance of health insurance coverage.

“The Government continues to place strong emphasis on ensuring that citizens have access to quality services that are available to all. Universal Health Insurance is central to these efforts. The insurance sector has a significant role to play in achieving the Government’s objective of ensuring that Tanzanians have access to affordable health coverage,” Hon. Munde said.
