Tanzania is advancing the expansion of its National ICT Broadband Backbone towards the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), strengthening the country’s role in regional digital connectivity.

The cross-border infrastructure project will connect Tanzania and the DRC through Lake Tanganyika, extending high-capacity communications infrastructure from Kigoma towards the neighbouring market.

According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the project comprises three main sections: 15 percent on land in Kigoma, 70 percent through Lake Tanganyika and 15 percent on the DRC side.

The infrastructure is expected to strengthen cross-border digital connectivity and support the movement of data and digital services between Tanzania and neighbouring markets.

For Tanzania, extending the national backbone beyond its borders reinforces its strategic position as a regional connectivity gateway while supporting digital trade, investment and deeper economic integration across East and Central Africa.
