IRINGA — The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Deogratius Ndejembi, has laid the foundation stone for the construction of new facilities at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) in Iringa Region.

The development forms part of the Sixth Phase Government’s commitment, under the leadership of H.E. President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, to advancing higher education through strategic investments that expand access, enhance teaching and learning environments, and develop the expertise required to support Tanzania’s national development priorities.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President stated that the Government, in partnership with the World Bank, had invested more than US$425 million, equivalent to approximately TSh1 trillion, in strengthening higher education through the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project. Of this investment, more than TSh30 billion has been directed towards improvements at MUCE.

He emphasised that this investment demonstrates the Government’s resolve to ensure that opportunities in higher education keep pace with the increasing number of students completing primary and secondary education.

The Vice President further noted that, since the 2021/2022 financial year, Iringa Region had received more than TSh175 billion to improve infrastructure in primary and secondary schools, providing a stronger foundation for continued educational advancement.

MUCE remains an important institution for the preparation of teachers in science and other disciplines. The construction of additional student accommodation, laboratories and modern classrooms will expand the College’s capacity to enrol students and enhance practical teacher training, contributing to the quality of education for future generations.
